Echo | Pam Muñoz Ryan
The book Echo involves a special harmonica. The harmonica finds its way first, to Friedrich in Germany, then, to Mike in Pennsylvania and finally, Ivy in California. The book is split into three parts, one part for each child. (Plus a few chapters that are not in the three parts.) The year is 1933 at the beginning. The plot includes World War II, so be prepared to read some sad and scary parts. The book is well written and portrays the characters’ hardships in different time periods realistically. Also be prepared to be reading the book for a while-there are 587 pages!
This book made me feel downcast. The first third was especially melancholy. Other parts of the book were shocking, happy, scary and exciting. The main emotions of the book were shocking and sad. The book almost (note: almost) made me cry. That is saying a lot.
