Endurance

Endurance | Alfred Lansing

It’s August 1914, London, England. Ernest Shackleton, polar explorer and adventurer, is about to set off on one of the greatest Antarctic expeditions ever. Shackleton plans to cross the frigid continent on foot, but disaster strikes in February 1915 when his ship, Endurance, is frozen in ice and smashed by the incredible pressure of the ice floes. Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven must now cross over 850 miles of the Antarctic’s ice and sea. Endurance’s crew faces frostbite, starvation, depression, blizzards, subzero temperatures and more in this thrilling account of Shackleton’s death-defying journey. The question will remain in the reader’s mind until the end– will they survive?

I found Endurance to be a captivating, high quality, exciting and inspirational story. Endurance has the perfect balance of detail and clarity, as well as journal entries from the crew. The author did a large amount of research and interviewing, and as a result the book, while being published in 1959, is still contemporary today. Please note that this is a review on the original book; it is unabridged and not a young reader’s edition.
