Girl in the Blue Coat

Girl in the Blue Coat | Monica Hesse

Hanneke’s job is to deliver illegal goods to high-paying customers in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation in 1943. She usually delivers meat, lard, sugar, chocolate, tea, and bacon, but when one of her clients, Mrs. Janssen, has an unusual request, Hanneke isn’t sure what to do. Mrs. Janssen asks Hanneke pleadingly to try to find Mirjam, a Jewish girl who had been hiding in a secret compartment in Mrs. Janssen’s house until she had escaped and disappeared. Finally, Hanneke decides to try to locate the missing girl. Soon she is swept up in the Nazi resistance movement, but as the clock ticks Hanneke and her friends in the resistance can only hope Mirjam is still alive.

Girl in the Blue Coat is an amazing story of perseverance, heartbreak, and hope amid almost unimaginable trial. This is definitely a stay-up-all-night-reading type of story, and you’ll be hooked from the first couple of pages.
