Refugee

Refugee | Alan Gratz

Refugee brings together the stories of three refugee families. Josef’s family seeks refuge from Hitler’s Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Isabel’s family attempts to flee politically unstable Cuba in 1994, and Mahmoud’s family escapes a war-torn Syria in 2015. These three kids will face incredible, horrible things as almost everything that they have known is lost. But through every trial, the hope for a better tomorrow is alive, and Isabel, Josef, and Mahmoud’s stories are connected in more ways than you may realize at first. Refugee is a raw, real, and amazing tale of survival and hope.

Refugee is a powerful book. Its story is captivating and authentic, and it gives a new perspective on war and refuge to the reader. Alan Gratz has written a book with not only well-crafted characters and a fast-paced plot, but also a story with a powerful message – that even in the middle of great struggle we can hope for a better tomorrow.
