The Princess and Curdie

The Princess and Curdie | George MacDonald

Princess Irene and Curdie are a year or two older and face new adventures in this sequel to The Princess and the Goblin. Princess Irene plays a lesser role in this book. Curdie faces his fears and acts with courage and humility as he solves challenges in a scheme against the king. The development of the moral character of Curdie echoes Biblical lessons of grace, forgiveness and love beautifully written for children and adults alike. The ending is surprising and abrupt with clear messages against greed and selfishness but in the current time even environmental conservation.

Overall, I preferred The Princess and the Goblin. However, since finishing this book, I have caught myself repeatedly referring back to several incredibly written, insightful sections of this book. Written in 1883 in old English.
