The Princess and the Goblin

The Princess and the Goblin | George MacDonald

In this fairy tale written to enchant children and adults alike, Princess Irene and an unlikely miner friend, Peter, face a battle against scary goblins who live underground and have a plot against the Princess. Princess Irene is a sweet, trusting character who is also very courageous.

We read this 1872 novel as a read aloud and enjoyed the detailed descriptions and contrasts between good and evil. The main characters show discernment when they choose love/family/honor over riches/fame. George MacDonald’s writing influenced many great writers including Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, E. Nesbitt, Mark Twain, J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L’Engle.
