Wee Sir Gibbie of the Highlands

Wee Sir Gibbie of the Highlands | George MacDonald

Wee Sir Gibbie is the heart breaking and inspiring story of a young boy, Gibbie, and his trials and triumphs through living by faith in the Scotland Highlands. Gibbie is unable to speak, and the story starts when he is living in poverty with his drunk father in the city. Yet, even in the difficult circumstances described, he shines light, unconditional love and forgiveness everywhere he goes. The story has a beautiful, and has a surprising ending.

We read this 1879 novel as a family read aloud and could not put it down- especially the second half. The first few chapters contain a realistic, very sad, portrayal of poverty including drunkenness, murder. Throughout the book, lessons of grace and overcoming evil with good prevail. This book will touch the heart of anyone who reads it, child and adult alike. (Please note, we read a version with updated English language by Michael Phillips)
